LINE is proud to present a new work by Montreal sound artist France Jobin. Having released under her moniker i8u, Valence is her first release under her own name. Created entirely from transformed field recordings, this collection of three compositions has an elegant flowing simplicity. Slow harmonic modulations of a similar essence to the works of Eliane Radigue and Celer.

Valence is inspired by both the valence bond (VB) and molecular orbital (MO) theories.

An atomic orbital is a mathematical function that describes the wave-like behavior of either one electron or a pair of electrons in an atom. This function can be used to calculate the probability of finding any electron of an atom in any specific region around the atom’s nucleus. The term may also refer to the physical region defined by the function where the electron is likely to be.

Often, my compositions start with a feeling or emotional state. There is a likelihood of finding a certain emotion in a piece, but it is not guaranteed, nor do I know exactly when or where I will find it. The act of looking for that emotion in of itself will distort it. Although one would think experimental music grants complete freedom, when composing, I feel constrained by both my mental state and the way in which I build the piece.

I find an unlikely parallel in quantum theory and composing. The electron that can exist on a different orbital plain can never have it’s velocity measured or even its exact location known, due to the intimate connection between particles and waves in the wacky world of subatomic dimensions.
All sounds recorded at various locations in North America and Europe.
Special thanks to Richard Chartier and Mark Hogben.

surface tension on murmur records

Surface tension ー i8u

out November 16.2011 on Murmur Records (Japan)

Surface tension is a new “sound sculpture” from renown audio installation artist i8u aka France Jobin. Based on field recordings taken from Canada and the EU, the prolific Jobin freely integrates digital, analog, glitch and drone into a field of aural vision that simultaneously exhibits micro and macro perspectives on a complex, yet inviting, environmental theme.

i8u’s art is about juxtapositions, analogue to digital, aural to visual, technological to philosophical. Her installations can often be experienced in live events and festivals across the Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

The movement of air currents are capable of causing a candle to quiver or waver. Air currents are the providence of the breath of the dead. The spirits of the deceased traverse the River Styx as souls of air. In Sanskrit, prana; in Greek, psyche or the pneuma of the aura; in Latin, the animus and spiritus of being. Gathering the spirits of the dead – their disembodied voices – into a wind capable of influencing a candle’s flame demonstrates the telekinetic power of the beyond

Everestrecords – terrestre

New album out by MATHON on the 29. April 2011 on Everestrecords
with remixes by Steinbrüchel, Digitalis, Kenneth Kirschner, i8u, Tobias Reber, Matu and Elektrohandel.

Pre-order on Junodownload and Vinyl pro-order here: http://everestrecords.greedbag.com/buy/terrestre-0/

The project Mathon has its name from a beautiful place in the Swiss Alps. Every year since 2003 Thomas  Augustiny,
Roger Stucki and Pete Leuenberg meet there and invite different musicians, to translate the impressive sur rounding into music. The conceptual project is ambient music by its original definition : spaces becomes sound and sound generates space.

This way four albums have been recorded, together with Ronny Spiegel, Maria Capelli, Nocolas Kellner and Maurice de Martin. The growing interest for the visualisation of the music, lead to  installation for Etoy, HKB
for the museum for communication.

The pieces of the current release were remixed by international known musicians like; Kenneth Kirschner, i8u, Steinbrüchel or Digitalis.

29 Palms on DER

i8u
29 Palms
de5030

i8u’s 29 Palms takes its inspiration from her recent experience at Joshua Tree National Park in Southern California. Through the use of field recordings, various analog equipment and computer processing, i8u explores her response to the isomorphic spaces she encountered. 29 Palms takes form as a single track that ebbs and flows from high frequency minimalist moments to lush drone swells. These counterpoints weave together to create a truly unique space for the listener to inhabit that is both expansive in its emptiness and personal in its inclusive embrace.

Michelangelo Antonioni – Trilogy And Epilogue on and/oar

The third and perhaps final project in the film director series which began with
“Andrei Tarkovsky – Another Kind Of Language” and “Yasujiro Ozu –
Hitokomakura”. “Michelangelo Antonioni – Trilogy And Epilogue” focuses upon
the Italian auteur’s landmark “tetralogy” of films L’Avventura (1960), La Notte
(1961), L’Eclisse (1962) and IlDeserto Rosso (1963).

Antonioni was known for not being very keen to use music in his films,
partially because he wanted the films to tell their stories free from “additional
gloss”. Therefore music was sparsely used – if at all. Antonioni considered the
natural sounds or “background noises” of a film to be of enormous importance,
and considered them to be the “true music” of a film. Obviously Antonioni’s
view resonates with and/OAR since environmental sound has always been it’s
main focus, and is one of the reasons why he was chosen for this project over
other film directors. Composer Giovanni Fusco, whose music is (more or less)
featured in most of Antonioni’s films from the late 1950s to the early ’60s said,
“the first rule for any musician who intends to collaborate with Antonioni, is to
forget that he is a musician!”

Yet, there is another composer who Antonioni worked with, that this project
seeks to acknowledge and pay subtle homage to in addition to the director
himself; because if it were not for his inspirational and pioneering minimal
electronic music featured in “Deserto Rosso”, this project might not have
come together at all: Vittorio Gelmetti. Gelmetti’s electronic work consistently
came to mind during the planning stages of this project, and his influence can
indeed be heard throughout this release.

ESSMAA on tsuku boshi

ESSMAA

ESSMAA is a collection of audio works reinterpreting the Tunis local tones
by an international array of sound artists.
ESSMAA includes exclusive new works created especially for this release.

Dumping in the local tones, the disorder of the distribution or the
understanding of the musical reins and the daily tones, the invited
musicians create a space in suspension, their space of interpretation.
More really “here” (the place of recording, the place of life of the
auditors to whom this disk will be offered), but certainly “not over
there” (the place of composition of the musicians), the listener ( re ) –
builds a unique and personal perception, by assemblies of small parts of
his aural memory.”Essmaa” (“Listen” to in Arabic) proposes a temporary
intersection between the outside and the ” daily initial bubble “. An
experience of listening.. An intervention extern for a second reading of
the everyday life. An awareness of the immediate sound environment, its
atmosphere and its impact..
