film soundtrack composer, sound / installation artist, curator – An architect designs works that occupy spaces; I create sound sculptures that fit in the flow of time and perception
Immersed in darkness, sound and images intertwine in a hypnotic dance. Landscapes, figures, and geometries deconstruct and reconstruct, drawing spectators into an immersive universe where the boundaries between sound and image dissolve. De-construct defies all spatial and temporal logic, offering viewers a trans-hypnotic experience. The artistic duo France Jobin and Line Katcho craft sonic and visual landscapes that oscillate between captivating harmonies and chaotic dissonances.
-Day 1: Listening & field recording – Processing & composing
Morning:
Participants will explore the urban environment through sound walks and recording. Recording techniques both conventional and unconventional will be used in order to facilitate new ways of listening to the environment and considering how and why to capture sounds for use in composition. I will also discuss how the recording process itself can facilitate a deeper connection to place, self and others.
Afternoon:
We will listen and I will teach how to edit and clean up recordings, compose a one minute track. I will discuss my own process of manipulating and assembling sounds into compositions. Both technical and conceptual aspects of the processing and composition stage will be discussed, and participants will work on generating short tracks to share and discuss with the group in order to have audio to attach to their visual component with Markus the next day with Touch Designer.
Day 2: Visuals TD – 10 – 14h with lunch break and pauses
All day:
Markus will cover from beginner to intermediate (adapting to the participants) Touch Designer aspects and will help the participant create visuals
to which they will add their audio composition. Each will leave with a short AV work they have created.
At the quantum level, the rules of physics break down and certainties dissolve: particles appear able to exist in two places at once, behave differently whether observed or ignored, and influence one another across incredible distances. France Jobin and Markus Heckmann’s immersive work draws on cutting-edge quantum theory, setting prismatic visualisations of impossible realities – micro and macro – to a gradually intensifying drone that captures the towering cosmic awe occasioned when the most minute processes in nature challenge us to rethink everything we think we know.
From September 3rd to 7th, experience France Jobin and Markus Heckmann’s live performance of their work Entanglement: Dome.
This piece explores the concept of entanglement: when two or more particles are connected, their states remain linked, no matter the distance between them. It’s a strange phenomenon of quantum physics that defies explanation.
Performing for only 5 nights, the project will then be presented as a film in the Satosphere starting September 17th.
SATOSPHÈRE Live performance: September 3rd to 7th Film format: starting September 17th
“In the ethereal realm of electronic soundscapes, the Buchla100 becomes not just an instrument but a vessel through which uncertainty finds expression. This performance is an exploration of the delicate dance between structured composition and the unforeseen, a sonic journey that mirrors the very essence of uncertainty itself.” France Jobin
Entanglement is a multi-work project that daringly fuses scientific inquiry and creative vision, by delving into the profound realm of quantum physics and artistic performance.
Based on the collaborative and colliding minds of artists France Jobin and Markus Heckmann, Entanglement finds its inspiration in the intricate theories of quantum entanglement, notably the Copenhagen interpretation and the multiverse (quantum decoherence). Beyond these theories, the project is further enriched – and challenged – by exploring the fluidity of time and the enigmatic principle of quantum entanglement.
Three iterations have been created, the original Entanglement AV performance (2021), Entanglement XR (2022), and Entanglement Dome (2023), designed to emancipate the audience from the constraints of conventional time. Participants are invited to lose themselves in this boundless expanse of creativity, where the borders between reality and imagination dissolve, leaving them suspended in time and in a state of wonder.
