In November 2019 and March 2024, France Jobin presented modular concerts at the Ernst Krenek Institute in Austria and we are proud to present those recordings on the legendary vintage Buchla 100 system along with some other analogisms…
France Jobin is a sound / installation / artist, composer and curator residing in Montreal, Canada. Her audio art can be qualified as “sound-sculpture”, revealing a minimalist approach to complex sound environments where analog and digital intersect. Her installations express a parallel path, incorporating both musical and visual elements inspired by the architecture of physical spaces. Her works can be “experienced” in a variety of unconventional spaces and new technology festivals across Canada, the United States, South America, South Africa, Europe, Australia, Japan and South Korea. Jobin has created solo recordings for Editions Mego (AT), No-ware (CL-DE), Silent Records (USA), popmuzik records (JP), bake/staalplaat (NL), ROOM40 (AU), nvo (AT), DER (US), ATAK (JP), murmur records (JP), Baskaru (FR) and the prestigious LINE label (US). Since 2009, her focus has been related to Quantum mechanics. Many of her projects are inspired by theories related to topics such as vacuum decay, string theory and more recently, what she feels to be the most perplexing phenomenon in the world of the quantum , entanglement resulting in a first presentation, Entanglement A/V, with visual artist Markus Heckmann, which delves into the realms of quantum physics premiered at Mutek Mtl 2021.

In a series that has already delivered so many innovative performances, Jobin’s contribution feels both essential and personal. Modulisme Session 123 is a fascinating addition to her already stellar discography and a testament—proof that in the right hands, modular synthesis can become pure poetry.
France Jobin’s Modulisme Session 123is a stunning contribution to the long-running Modulisme series—a platform that has consistently championed modular synthesis as both an art form and a philosophy. As a long-time fan of Jobin’s work, I was especially thrilled to hear her take on this session, and she does not disappoint. True to her refined style, this release is rich in intricate detail, with a meticulous arrangement of clicks, blips, and microscopic textures that form a beautifully precise sonic architecture.
Jobin’s approach here is disciplined yet expressive. Each sound feels carefully chosen and purposefully placed, creating an evolving structure that’s as intellectually satisfying as it is sonically intriguing. There’s a tactile sense of space and movement—sounds dart, flicker, and pulse in and out of focus, like signals from a distant, beautifully functioning machine. Rather than rely on sweeping gestures, Jobin leans into the micro—the hum, the glitch, the shimmer—and in doing so, constructs something quietly monumental.
A dedicated platform for left-field modular synth artists
To appreciate this session fully, it helps to understand the context of the Modulisme (translates Modularism). Curated by Philippe Petit, Modulisme sessions launched in 2019 as a dedicated platform for left-field modular synth artists working across genres and geographies. Each session is a standalone work, all featuring exclusive compositions recorded live with analog modular gear. The series roster is a who’s who in contemporary modular music, showcasing artists such as Todd Barton, Thomas Dimuzio, Ian Boddy, Jack Dangers, Scanner, Benge, and many more.
France Jobin’s Session 123 is a standout in this context. Her sound design feels effortlessly precise, full of restrained energy and clever asymmetry. The use of clicks and blips gives the piece a rhythmic undercurrent that never becomes obvious, always skirting the edge of pattern without locking into repetition. It’s music that rewards close listening—offering new details with every play.
In a series that has already delivered so many innovative performances, Jobin’s contribution feels both essential and personal. Modulisme Session 123 is a fascinating addition to her already stellar discography and a testament—proof that in the right hands, modular synthesis can become pure poetry.
Immersed in darkness, sound and images intertwine in a hypnotic dance. Landscapes, figures, and geometries deconstruct and reconstruct, drawing spectators into an immersive universe where the boundaries between sound and image dissolve. De-construct defies all spatial and temporal logic, offering viewers a trans-hypnotic experience. The artistic duo France Jobin and Line Katcho craft sonic and visual landscapes that oscillate between captivating harmonies and chaotic dissonances.
Entanglement is a dazzling work that distills quantum physics theories into a swooping sensorial experience. It interprets the concept of entanglement: when two or more particles link up, and no matter how far apart they are in space, their states remain linked. It is an uncanny phenomenon in quantum physics, one that defies explanations.
The piece oscillates between four theories: the fluidity of time, the multiverse, the Copenhagen interpretation and decoherence. These complex notions are translated into a visually and sonically stunning experience guided by science, technology, and the sensitivity needed to illustrate what cannot be visualized. The viewer contemplates these revolving realms, composed of intricate graphics and audio.

Get ready to dive into the immersive art show taking over the main room this year!
Curated in collaboration with MUTEK, ‘Québec Perspectives’ will take you on an exciting journey through immersive artworks and digital landscapes produced by 10 esteemed Québec artists and creative studios; an extraordinary 360° experience where Québec’s artistic visions come together to celebrate creativity through the magic of digital art
This project is executed with the support of the Québec Government.
By delving into the profound realm of quantum physics and artistic performance, this multi-work project daringly fuses scientific inquiry and creative vision.
Inspired by the intricate theories of quantum entanglement, notably the Copenhagen interpretation and the multiverse (quantum decoherence) the project is further enriched – and challenged – by exploring the fluidity of time and the enigmatic principle of quantum entanglement.
In its fourth version/iteration Entanglement invites you to lose yourselves in this boundless expanse of creativity, where the borders between reality and imagination dissolve, leaving them suspended in time and in a state of wonder.
-Day 1: Listening & field recording – Processing & composing
Morning:
Participants will explore the urban environment through sound walks and recording. Recording techniques both conventional and unconventional will be used in order to facilitate new ways of listening to the environment and considering how and why to capture sounds for use in composition. I will also discuss how the recording process itself can facilitate a deeper connection to place, self and others.
Afternoon:
We will listen and I will teach how to edit and clean up recordings, compose a one minute track. I will discuss my own process of manipulating and assembling sounds into compositions. Both technical and conceptual aspects of the processing and composition stage will be discussed, and participants will work on generating short tracks to share and discuss with the group in order to have audio to attach to their visual component with Markus the next day with Touch Designer.
Day 2: Visuals TD – 10 – 14h with lunch break and pauses
All day:
Markus will cover from beginner to intermediate (adapting to the participants) Touch Designer aspects and will help the participant create visuals
to which they will add their audio composition. Each will leave with a short AV work they have created.
At the quantum level, the rules of physics break down and certainties dissolve: particles appear able to exist in two places at once, behave differently whether observed or ignored, and influence one another across incredible distances. France Jobin and Markus Heckmann’s immersive work draws on cutting-edge quantum theory, setting prismatic visualisations of impossible realities – micro and macro – to a gradually intensifying drone that captures the towering cosmic awe occasioned when the most minute processes in nature challenge us to rethink everything we think we know.
From September 3rd to 7th, experience France Jobin and Markus Heckmann’s live performance of their work Entanglement: Dome.
This piece explores the concept of entanglement: when two or more particles are connected, their states remain linked, no matter the distance between them. It’s a strange phenomenon of quantum physics that defies explanation.
Performing for only 5 nights, the project will then be presented as a film in the Satosphere starting September 17th.
