AxS Festival 2014 | CURIOSITY is presenting the North American premiere of\u00a0SPHAERAE<\/em>, a large-scale temporary public artwork by\u00a0Dutch architect Cocky Eek.\u00a0SPHAERAE<\/em>\u00a0is an inflatable pavilion \u2014 a component of an ongoing strand of research by architect Eek into the pneumatology and tactility of inflatables and lightweight spaces. Developed in partnership with\u00a0Synergetica Lab<\/em>\u00a0in Amsterdam and the Artscience Interfaculty program in The Hague,\u00a0SPHAERAE<\/em>\u00a0consists of five semi-transparent bubbles of different sizes, which together form a multi-dome construction designed for immersive, synaesthetic experience.<\/p>\n

Eek was inspired to create\u00a0SPHAERAE<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a010,000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid<\/em>, an audiovisual performance work by Netherlands-based artists\u00a0Evelina Domnitch\u00a0and\u00a0Dmitry Gelfand. In\u00a010,000 Peacock Feathers,<\/em>\u00a0Domnitch and Gelfand use laser light to scan the surfaces of nucleating and dissipating soap bubble clusters.<\/p>\n

\"DOMNITCH<\/p>\n

Unlike ordinary light, the laser\u2019s focused beam is capable of generating a large-scale projection of molecular interactions as well as mind-boggling phenomena of non-linear optics.\u00a0Sph\u00e6r\u00e6\u2019s<\/em>inflatable structure was designed to both serve as a platform for this uniquely spectacular work, as well as create a venue for other artists, scientists, and performers to make 180\u00b0 works and compositions which explore the phenomena of light, sound and movement within the domes.<\/p>\n

AxS Festival 2014 will present Domnitch +\u00a0Gelfand in a live performance of\u00a010,000 Peacock Feathers in Foaming Acid<\/em>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/em>the work that inspired the creation of the SPHAERAE platform\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and\u00a0Solunaris<\/em>, a new collaborative work by\u00a0William Basinski & Richard Chartier\u00a0commissioned by the Pasadena Arts Council and curated by Domnitch +\u00a0Gelfand.<\/p>\n

SPHAERAE<\/em>\u00a0will also feature the premiere of\u00a0Sol Path<\/em>, a new interactive music work\u00a0by composer\/cognitive scientist\u00a0Bruno Louchouarn.A\u00a0concerto for solo viola\/percussion\/soundscape,\u00a0Sol Path<\/em>\u00a0features live performance by renowned viola soloist\u00a0Brett Deubner, and immersive multi-media by Asheville, North Carolina-based designer Adam Larsen.<\/p>\n

Sol Path<\/em>\u00a0is inspired by the exploratory path that the Rover takes over the course of a Martian day \u2014 a\u00a0Sol\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 which is collaboratively programmed by a team of Earth-bound explorers.\u00a0Sol Path<\/em>\u00a0was created in part with composer Louchouarn in residency at NASA\/JPL. Through his dialogues with the\u00a0Mars Curiosity team \u2014 rover\u00a0drivers, artificial intelligence designers, the \u201cplanetary protection team\u201d and others \u2014\u00a0actual data from the Curiosity mission will become inputs to Louchoarn\u2019s composition and inform the very shape of the experience.<\/p>\n

SPHAERAE will be on view for the duration of\u00a0AxS Festival 2014 | CURIOSITY and feature projects including work, as a far-ranging program of sound works, video screenings, and talks by artists including\u00a0Chris Duncan,\u00a0Jeff Cain,Mattia Casalegno, France Jobin, Favio Perletta, xx+xy visuals, Francisco L\u00f3pez,\u00a0Intimatchine,\u00a0Lucky Dragons,\u00a0Mike Harding\/Touch,\u00a0Yann Novak,\u00a0Eric Parren,\u00a0Paul Prudence,\u00a0Steve Roden,\u00a0Jet Smits,\u00a0Julie Tolentino,\u00a0Martijn Van Boven,\u00a0Bas Van Koolwijk, and\u00a0Virons.<\/p>\n

SYNERGETICA SCREENING<\/a><\/p>\n

Curated by\u00a0Evelina Domnitch and Dmitry Gelfand, the ArtScience Interfaculty and Synergetica Lab present a series of multi-sensory performances and installations in the context of synthetic biology. Founded in 2006 in The Netherlands, Synergetica is an art-science laboratory, investigating photonics, fluid dynamics, acoustics, quantum chemistry and psychophysics.<\/p>\n
