Michelangelo Antonioni: Trilogy And Epilogue
\nVarious<\/p>\n

and\/OAR 2 X CD<\/p>\n

“I am personally very reluctant to use music
\nin my films, for the simple reason that I
\nprefer to work in a dry manner, to say things
\nwith the least means possible,” said
\nMichelangelo Antonioni in 1961, the same
\nperiod in which he shot the films
\nL’Avventura, La Notte, L’Eclisse and Il
\nDeserto Rosso. So, it’s appropriate that this
\ncollection of 24 homages to those films,
\nfollowing two previous and\/OAR collections
\ndedicated to Ozu and Tarkovsky, contains
\nfew obviously ‘musical’ elements:<\/p>\n

Dale Lloyd and Marihiko Hara both feature tentative
\npianos, and Kyle Bruckman plays cor
\nanglais on EKG’s fine track, but otherwise,
\nwe’re in a workd of vast spaces, ambiguous
\nsoundscapes, changing weather and
\nglowing noise.<\/p>\n

Atmospheric works by Juan Jos\u00e9
\nCalarco and Richard Garet could easily be
\nsoundtracks in their own right. i8u (aka
\nFrance Jobin) is hyper minimal,
\nshifting curtains of colour just barely there.
\nAsher has possibly buried a string orchestra
\nin his back yard, while Tomas Phillips
\nmelds chiming bells with intake of breath
\n(lifted) from an Antonioni soundtrack?).
\nAlso excellent are Olivia Block with Adam
\nSonderberg, and Pali Meursault’s filmic
\nconcr\u00e8te, a dream of trains with squeaky
\nwindow hinges. All these tracks are
\nconsistent with one another, meaning the
\ncollection works surprisingly well as a
\nstraight-through listen.<\/p>\n

And and\/OAR,s Ozu homage came
\naccompanied by an online booklet of
\nphotos and track info, but here the link
\nbetween music and films is never discussed,
\nwhich suits Antonioni fine. Stuck in our
\nmemories, his images become the music’s
\ncontext. Its ambiguity fits them like a glove:
\nMonica Vitti’s bleak couplings, those
\nurban landscape where something or
\nsomeone is missing.<\/p>\n
