France Jobin will be travelling to Medellin, Colombia in July and September 2018, to take part in an international residency organized by Éter Lab and Museo de Arte Moderno  Medellin..

The first half of the residency will take place July 12th -26th 2018 during Auditum Festival – Semana de la Escucha.

Escuchando desde adentro – La arquitectura del sonido y nuestras expectativas.

La instalación, la música y elementos visuales inspirados por la arquitectura y el manejo del espacio, convergen en el trabajo de France Jobin, artista sonora, compositora y curadora de Canadá. Es reconocida por sus “esculturas sonoras” en tiempo real que revelan una aproximación minimalista a paisajes sonoros complejos, mezclando influencias digitales y analógicas.

En este taller, la artista introducirá su práctica, específicamente los aspectos alusivos al sonido y los espacios; las relaciones de estos sonidos con la música tradicional, el cine y otras características de la experiencia de la percepción sonora en su sentido abierto a las diferentes formas de la escucha.

“La sinestesia que se produce en los espacios arquitectónicos es la la fuerza que me impulsa a explorar el sonido. Mientras un arquitecto hace diseños pensados para ocupar un espacio, yo me intereso por elaborar esculturas de sonido que encajan en la fluidez del tiempo y la percepción. El entorno, por ejemplo, le da forma y un carácter arquitectónico a mis piezas y a su sonoridad. Por otro lado, cuando hago instalaciones y conciertos tiendo a ubicar parlantes en lugares específicos que tienen correlación con la arquitectura del espacio. De esta manera logro esculturas sonoras que no son necesariamente objetuales”.

Esta propuesta para el formato fulldome parte como un vuelo por el espacio, por la representación en diferentes culturas de constelaciones como dioses y seres híbridos que a su vez se unen con los humanos y crean otros seres, que se aparean con bestias y crean otras bestias, que a su vez arrasan con su entorno. ¿Qué pasa con el híbrido que se cruza con otro híbrido?

Simon Chioini – “Sans titre 3 et 4” (2018)

Venu à la musique par la percussion, l’électroacousticien Simon Chioini compose une musique qui fait écho aux pionniers du genre autant qu’aux courants contemporains d’une musique électronique underground. “Sans titre 3 et 4” (2018) présentent des sonorités dont la pureté contraste avec un foisonnement bruité.

France Jobin – “24-45” (2018)

Artiste audio qui se distingue par une approche minimaliste d’environnements sonores complexes à l’intersection de l’analogue et du numérique, France Jobin fait entendre de véritables sculptures sonores. Sa pièce “24-45” (2018) mêle hauteurs et amplitudes dans un ballet visant à déstabiliser la perception de l’auditeur.

Dominic Thibault – “VCS3 remix” (2018)

La musique du codirecteur du label The Silent Howl se situe à la croisée de la musique concrète, du techno minimal et du paysage sonore. “VCS3 remix” (2018) est une version écourtée du disque du même nom, sur lequel toute la musique est composée uniquement à l’aide de sons générés par le synthétiseur EMS VCS3

Robert Normandeau – “La part des anges” (2011-12)

L’un des fondateurs d’AKOUSMA, Robert Normandeau consacre la majeure partie de son travail à la musique acousmatique, de même qu’à l’enseignement (Université de Montréal). Sa pièce La part des anges (2011-12) est construite à partir d’échantillonnages de chants a capella.

 

Intrication No. 916 – Stray Landings

France Jobin’s latest work, Intrication, takes its cues from aspects of quantum theory I’m not going to pretend to understand with much coherence. In essence, the album looks at a process known as ‘quantum entanglement’; when particles interact in such a way that the quantum state of each cannot be described without reference to the other. The album puts the tiniest fragments under the microscope, revealing within them kaleidoscopic expanses.

Despite the fact Intrication explores these scientific complexities, it could equally be replicating religious or near-death experiences. ‘m’ is a good example of this reverent quality; like an interlude from a cLOUDDEAD track stretched to the extreme. ‘03V’ follows a similar mood, delicate sun-blushed washes of ambience lightly brushing past. Playing into France’s concept for the album, this track forms part of a larger picture. The ‘V’ stands for ‘vignette’, and ‘01V’ to ‘04V’ are interspersed between the rest of the tracks, acting as a familiar motif throughout.

While these act as palette cleansing interludes, the tracks between cover more wide-ranging territory. One of the albums greatest nuances is the combination of natural and synthetic tones. Take ‘graviton’ for example, a glorious combination of warm, expansive dub-ambience and microcopic static pulses. Perhaps the crux of Intrication, ‘e-‘, is another case in point. Delicate chimes ring across the stereo field, gentle reverberations rising and falling abruptly in the backdrop. These resonant twinkles are eventually met by undulating low-end structures, the chimes dissolving into itching twitches of static.

It’s fitting Intrication sees its release on Material Object and Atom™’s ‘No.’ label. Throughout his own work Atom™ has explored similar mediations between the scientific and the psychedelic (take a listen to his mid-90s DATacide project for example). Speaking with France about her interpretation of quantum entanglement through the album, she discussed applying the same concept to the relationship between sound and our perception of it. At this point the question becomes almost a philosophical one; as we are presented with the possibility that each of our perceptions may differ, although still pertaining to the same ‘real world’ sound. Whatever our sensory differences might be however, there is a joyous sense of wonder and cosmic discovery to be found throughout Intrication; a considered tribute to the unknown.

Subharmonic: A Sonic Arts Symposium spans two immersive days of interactive workshops, thought-provoking panels, and live performances for artists and audiences of all experience levels to explore, discuss, and engage with a broad range of contemporary and experimental sound art and its influences. Programs will touch on electronic and noise music, video and light installation, film and video, space and architecture, racial and gender equity in the field, and more.

Both local and global critical ideas and creative practices will be shared, with a keynote presentation by sound art curator and practitioner France Jobin (Montréal) and performances and conversations featuring numerous local artists. Collaboratively curated by a consortium of local arts organizations and collectives, the full scope of symposium activity reflects a commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices in sound art and highlighting the depth and diversity of sonic art landscape, practices, and communities in Portland and beyond.

6:00 PM – 9:00 PM – SIX is a Portland, Oregon based, DIY, community-oriented, “surround sound” performance series with an emphasis on presenting local, regional, and international experimental musicians/sound artists in a multi-directional immersive listening environment. SIX offers the audience an opportunity to explore different ways of listening. For many participants SIX is a unique chance to explore performing through six separate channels. Each group will explore sounds found within walking radius of PICA. Exploring natural, industrial, and climatological, acoustic ecologies, the workshop will focus on basic recording techniques, ways of listening, DIY tools and unconventional recording technologies. RSVP REQUIRED – USE THIS FORM TO SAVE YOUR SPOT.

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM – SIX Installation / Interactive Demo 15 minute demonstration of several sound-making objects which are amplified with contact mics, and mixed into the six-channel setup followed by a Q+A with Marcus Fischer and hands-on sound-making and panning to provide an experience that connects the soundmaking with the multi-channel possibilities.

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM – Using Your Voice With Modular Synthesizer

In this hour long interactive workshop we will explore using voice in conjunction with modular synthesizers. We will cover some basic concepts and a simple signal flow we can use to patch our voice to a eurorack modular synth. The various interlocking scenes of experimental and ambient music are geographically dispersed but nonetheless close-knit, and the effects of significant events in these genres ripple out far and wide. Such was the case with the untimely death of Mika Vainio, a founder of Pan Sonic and producer of numerous landmark recordings under his own name and the moniker Ø, in April 2017. “scènes” is Canadian sound artist France Jobin’s tribute to her friend, offered in her own distinctive language of minimalist ambient music.

The album fades in with a warm breathing chord, joined later by steadier tones. The music is quiet and subdued, barely there at times, before returning with slightly more intensity. The second ‘scène’ is more present, with major key tones gently tumbling over one another. A repeating melodic motif injects more energy, though the piece remains fairly quiet. The sense of calm and peace is palpable across the first half of the album, derived from major key harmony, low volume, and an unhurried pace.

The minor-key drone and fluttering, trembling tones of ‘scène 3’ make it the only track on the album to resemble a typical musical expression of grief. Mid-way through the piece, the drone fades almost to the point of inaudibility, then returns with stiller, more stable tones, losing some of the earlier distraught quivering. ‘scène 4’ also flutters, but rather than sounding distraught instead pulses with energy; to me, its driving rhythms feel like a positive celebration and affirmation of life. Music needn’t shy away from pain or grief, but it is also able to remind us why we struggle. “scènes” is able to look sorrow in the eye, but at the same time remembers the good, and holds on tightly to the light.

No. welcomes Canadian France Jobin to the label. 

The Montreal based artist will release her 9th album on No.. With her release entitled ‘Intrication’, she grapples with some truly cosmic concepts involving Quantum Entanglement (go on, Google it..) amongst other truly magical ideas which physics tend to invent these days.

Musically the release can be described as ‘microsound ambient’ but we think it’s much larger than that. It is at once comprised of microscopic sonic particles yet combines that with the warmth we know and love from the ‘Ambient’ cosmos.

Whilst the sub atomic particles of noise bounce around your mind, the total work weaves a warm blanket of audio enjoyment on both the micro and macroscopic levels revealing a world at once both too tiny to comprehend and too large to grasp. Presented here as No. 916 for your scientific scrutiny.

U večerašnjoj emisiji predstavićemo ostvarenja kanadske autorke Frans Žoben, pre svega numere sa njenog najnovijeg albuma „Scene”, kao i sa ostvarenja „Singulum” i „Bez repera”.

Frans Žoben je umetnica i kompozitorka iz Montreala, koja se bavi i stvaranjem elektronskih kompozicija i zvučnih instalacija, u koje inkorporira muzičke i vizuelne elemente inspirisane arhitekturom. Njena dela su izlagana širom sveta, a takođe je objavljivala za neke od vodećih kuća posvećenih elektronskoj muzici poput Bake/Štalplat, RumForti, Baksaru, Mjutek i drugih, sarađujući sa Štefanom Matjuom, Rijodžijem Ikedom, Markom Felom i Ričardom Šartijeom. Dobitnica je prestižne kanadske nagrade Opus za koncert godine u okviru kategorije elektroakustike, za nastup na festivalu AKUZMA 8.

Album Scene ova umetnica je objavila 17. novembra za kuću L-INE Imprint. Ovo ostvarenje je posvećeno finskom muzičaru Miki Vainiju, koji je preminuo u aprilu, i koji je bio njen dobar prijatelj. Žoben je kao jedino obrazloženje ponudila sledeće reči: „Značaj promene je nepromenljivo, pod uslovima linearnog vremena, večnost će doneti utehu”.
